Physical Gauges — The Old Faithfuls
The simplest monitors have no electronics at all.
Dipsticks and sight tubes
A stick or a clear tube plumbed to the bottom of the tank shows the water level directly. Cheap, but you have to walk to the tank — and often climb it — every time you want a reading.
Float and dial gauges
A weighted float sits on the water surface, connected by a cord or wire to a dial or indicator on the outside of the tank. As the level drops, the float drops, and the dial moves.
They're inexpensive and don't need batteries, but they have two real problems:
- Accuracy. A dial driven by a string and pulley gives you a rough band at best — "somewhere between half and a third". Cords stretch, floats take on water, mechanisms stick. You're reading an estimate of an estimate.
- Lifespan. Sun, heat, algae and grit are hard on moving parts. Cords fray, pulleys seize, indicators fade. Most physical gauges quietly stop telling the truth after a few seasons — and because they fail gradually, you often don't notice until the tank runs dry with the needle still showing a third full.
And even a perfectly working dial only helps if you walk past it. It can't warn you at 2 am that a fitting is leaking.

How they measure
Most use one of two methods. Ultrasonic sensors sit at the top of the tank and bounce a sound pulse off the water surface, timing the echo to calculate the level. Hydrostatic pressure sensors sit at the bottom and measure the weight of the water column above them. Both are far more accurate than any float and cord.
How they get the reading to you
This is where the differences really matter:
- Wi-Fi models send data through your home router to a cloud service, which pushes it to an app. Fine — if your tank is close enough to the house to get a Wi-Fi signal. On rural properties it usually isn't.
- Cellular (LTE/4G) models use the mobile network instead. That works further from the house, but you're now paying an ongoing subscription (typically $79–$99 a year in Australia), you need mobile coverage at the tank, and your data travels through a third-party cloud platform.
